Ten teenage kayakers had to be rescued from the swollen Pemigewasset River in New Hampshire on Wednesday after their kayaks hit debris and they became trapped.
According to an article on UnionLeader.com, a girl who had been clinging to a boulder that was “in the strongest section of current” was brought to safety by a firefighter tethered to the shore while nine other teens were ferried from a tiny island where they had become stranded.
It’s the same spot on the river where a father and son were rescued on July 1. Officials said the section of river is notorious for being fast moving and for accumulating debris.
The 10 teens were part of a group of 50 people from a nearby camp who were kayaking but took a wrong turn out of the main channel and into this dangerous stretch of river.
All the kayakers were reportedly wearing life jackets.
