While winter stubbornly hung on this spring, keeping trails to Katahdin’s summit closed deep into May, it looks like it’s finally losing it’s grip.
The Baxter State Park Authority has announced that the Helon Taylor, Knife Edge and Hunt trails are now open, providing access to Katahdin Peak. However, the Abol Trail remains closed.
Additionally, some snow and ice remain at the edge of the treeline at the base of the Hunt Spur. Rangers have flagged a bypass around the most difficult area, and hikers are asked to use this bypass until conditions improve.
