A 63-year-old grandmother and kayaker is planning to paddle more than 2,500 miles from Yarmouth, Maine, to Guatemala in an effort to raise funds for the Maine-based nonprofit Safe Passage, which sets up schools in Guatemala city.

Deb Walters’ previous solo kayaking expeditions were in the Arctic, along the Atlantic coasts in the Northeast and the Maritimes, and through tropical waters in Mexico. She has arthritis and plans to paddle slowly, stopping in coastal cities along the way to raise awareness for children living in the Guatemala City garbage dump community.
