fat bikeMaine Huts and Trails, Sugarloaf, and the Carrabassett Region Chapter of the New England Mountain Biking Association (NEMBA) will host the first ever Sugarloaf Fat Tire Festival happening April 3-5 in Maine’s Carrabassett Valley region.

The festival features a timed climb up mountain trails to the top of a specially prepared banked slalom course, with descent through high banked turns and other features that take riders back to the base area. Awards will be given after the race and fat tire retailers will be set-up to offer fat tire bike demo rides. Spectators will be able to try out the fat tire bikes right around the village, or for the more determined, a cross-country bike trail is also available. Shuttle service will be provided.

There will be a barbecue and cash bar with entertainment, with a pre-registration bonfire on Friday, April 3, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Outdoor Center, complete with night-time ride. A Stratton Brook lunch ride is planned for Sunday with Maine Huts and Trails.

Registration for the Fat Tire Downhill Race is $40 and includes race entry, course access, a bike demo tag, goodie bag, complimentary beer ticket for the Beach Bar and commemorative item. Only 75 registrations will be sold; if not sold out, registrations will be first come, first served during the pre-registration party. Registration is available at http://www.nemba.org/events/sugarloaf-fat-tire-festival.
