mountain bike raceMountain biking could soon become the newest sport at high schools throughout the Northeast.

According to an article in the Boston Herald, cycling advocates in Massachusetts are working to create a high school mountain biking league.

The National Interscholastic Cycling Association reports that there are 15 such leagues with more than 5,000 student-athletes nationwide. Most of those leagues are based out West, but that might soon change.

New York has already established a league, the New York High School Cycling League, which was established in 2012 to provide competitive mountain biking programs for students in grades 9 to 12. And Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and other states are now showing interest.
