The number of licensed mountain bike racers in the US declined from roughly 30,000 in the late 1990s down to just over 10,000 last year, according to USA Cycling.

But officials involved with the Eastern Fat Tire Association report that interest in mountain bike racing in New England has seen an uptick recently thanks in large part to fat bikes and singlespeeds.
