trail runnerMaybe you love the idea of running an endurance race like a triathlon or a Tough Mudder, but you don’t want to deal with overwhelming crowds or the steep entry fees.

Of course, there is an alternative: Making up your own race.

That’s what one group of people did in New Hampshire’s White Mountains last September. A recent article on NYTimes.com profiled the adventure, and it looks like a lot of fun and relatively easy to do.

The event took place in Rumney, New Hampshire, about an hour north of Concord, and away from the crowds in the Presidential Range and Kancamagus Highway. The event featured a frigid lake swim, an 11-mile bike ride and 2.5-mile hike on Rattlesnake Mountain.
