A Massachusetts rock climber survived a 50-foot fall from Cathedral Ledge in North Conway, New Hampshire on Sunday.

According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Nicholas Mozdzierz, 25, of Somerville, Massachusetts, was leading a climb on Cathedral Ledge in an area known as the North End. He started having difficulty on the route and began to downclimb when he fell.

The force of the fall caused the top two pieces of protection to fail, and he plummeted roughly 50 feet to the ground.

He was unconscious immediately after the fall, but eventually regained consciousness. Mozdzierz was carried out of the woods by members of North Conway Fire and Rescue and he was taken to a local hospital.

Mozdzierz’s injuries were reportedly not life-threatening. Officials say he was wearing a helmet at the time of the fall, which may have saved his life.
