After more than 100 years, hikers along Vermont’s Long Trail finally have a bridge they can use to cross the Winooski River.
The Green Mountain Club officially opened the 224-foot-long suspension bridge over the river on Friday. With towers 40 feet high, it’s the largest structure on the Long Trail. Construction on the bridge began in the summer of 2013. And, according to VPR.net, the project cost roughly $1.5 million.
The new bridge will make a huge difference for hikers. Before the bridge, hikers either had to find someone to ferry them across the river or walk three-and-a-half miles to cross the river in Jonesville.
