bald-eagleA band on the leg of a bald eagle that was struck and killed by a car in New York earlier this month indicated it was the oldest bald eagle ever encountered in the United States, according to an article on IFLScience.com.

The dead eagle was discovered along a road in Henrietta, New York on June 2. It had just killed a rabbit when it was apparently hit by a car. Collisions with vehicles cause nearly a third of known eagle deaths in New York. According to the band on the male’s leg, he was 38 years old, breaking the country’s previous longevity record by five years.
