Ultrarunner Scott Jurek reached the summit of Maine’s Mount Katahdin this afternoon, breaking the previous Appalachian Trail supported thru-hike speed record by just over three hours.

According to an article on RunnersWorld.com, Jurek reached the top of Katahdin shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 12. He completed the 2,189-mile trek in 46 days, 8-plus hours.

For the past decade, Jurek has been the best ultrarunner in the country, His accomplishments include seven consecutive Western States Endurance Run wins, two Badwater Ultramarathon wins, and he was featured prominently in the popular book Born to Run. He planned to run the Appalachian Trail before retiring from the sport.
