coyoteA hiker in southern New Jersey climbed a tree to escape coyotes Sunday night, and became stuck in the tree for nearly 5 hours, according to an article in the Asbury Park Press.

The woman, April Lewis of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, was hiking in New Jersey’s Manchester Township when she thought she saw coyotes in the distance. She reportedly climbed a nearby tree for safety, cutting off a piece of her pants to tie herself to it. She did not have a cell phone on her.

After the coyotes were gone, Lewis said her legs were too tired to get out of the tree. And it was nearly five hours before anyone heard her cries for help and contacted police, who helped her down.
