A U.S. National Weather Service model shows Hurricane Sandy roaring over southern New England next week.
The chances of a massive storm striking the northeast next week are increasing as computer models are showing it is now unlikely Hurricane Sandy will drift harmlessly out to sea.
Forecasters are now predicting Sandy will impact the Northeast in some way, although the strength of that impact depends on the storm’s track. While some computer models show the storm striking the mid-Atlantic states, with the Northeast dealing with strong remnants, others show the storm making a direct hit on Long Island and southern New England.
To make matters worse (or better, if you want snow), the storm is predicted to collide with a powerful winter storm coming from the West and a blast of cold, Arctic air moving in from the North, creating a storm that could produce significant snowfall.
