A 27-acre island in Maine’s Frenchman Bay will remain undeveloped and available for public use now that is has been donated to a conservation group.

Bean Island was donated to the Frenchman Bay Conservancy by owner Lisa Heyward on January 7, according to an article on MDIslander.com. The island has been in Heyward’s family since her great-grandmother purchased it.

While Heyward’s grandmother owned the island in 1975, a grandchild reportedly suggested subdividing and developing it. Instead, her grandmother put the island into conservation easement with Acadia National Park.
