It might be a three-day weekend, but even the most diehard outdoorsman and woman might consider staying inside this President’s Day weekend as a dangerous cold front invades the Northeast. The air in the  Adirondacks, White Mountains and western Maine all have the potential to feel like between 40 and 50 degrees below zero, according to Accuweather.com.

The dangerous front hits the region almost a year to the day after frightening conditions swept into the White Mountains during last year’s President’s Day weekend, claiming the life of hiker Kate Matrosova.

According to Accuweather.com, temperatures this weekend may at times be colder than they were at any point during last year’s notoriously cold winter. Temperatures in Boston are expected to be near zero Saturday and well-below zero Saturday night. On Sunday, temperatures in the city are likely to stay below the mid-teens.

In the Adirondack High Peaks region, the National Weather Service is forecasting a Saturday high of 5 below zero, and a low Saturday evening of 22 degrees below zero. Sunday is expected to only reach 1 degree below zero.

In the White Mountains, the Mount Washington Observatory’s early weekend forecast for the high summits states “Temperatures will fall well below average for the weekend as air temperatures fall past 30 below with winds increasing.”
