Two tram cars stalled on New Hampshire’s Cannon Mountain in frigid temperatures Sunday, stranding dozens of passengers in mid-air for several hours.

According to an article on Boston.com, 48 passengers were safely evacuated by rappelling down from the two tram cars. No one was injured.

Cannon Mountain officials said a mechanical problem caused the braking system to become engaged, stranding both cars roughly 50 to 75 feet from the top and bottom terminals shortly before 2 p.m. There were 41 people on the car at the bottom going up and 7 people in the top car coming down. Just after 3 p.m., blankets were sent up to the top car to help guests stay warm. A call was made to begin evacuating people from the cars, beginning with the top car at 3:20 p.m. Evacuation of the top car was complete at 3:45 p.m., and guests were escorted into the top terminal restaurant and offered hot food and drinks. They were brought down the mountain by snowcats to the base at 4:30 p.m.

Evacuation of the bottom car began at 3:45 p.m. and was complete by 4:45 p.m. Guests were brought into the bottom terminal and offered hot food and drinks. All guests were also offered vouchers to come back another day.

Cannon officials said the tram would not be running on Monday and they anticipated it to take an additional 1 to 2 days to have it fixed.
