Working toward a goal is a great excuse to go hiking. And if you’re looking for a challenge, there’s a great one in New York’s Catskill Mountains: The Catskill 35.

A recent article on NewYorkUpstate.com profiles the challenge. Encompassing 5,892 square miles, the Catskills offer hikers dense forests, beautiful rivers, breathtaking scenery and challenging trails.

To become a member of the Catskill 3500 Club, hikers must climb the region’s 35 highest peaks – all over 3,500 feet tall. But there’s a catch: Four of them – including the region’s tallest peak, Slide Mountain (4,180 feet) – must be climbed in the winter.
