Still reeling from last year’s largely snowless winter, officials with New York’s Big Tupper Ski Area say they need snow early in the season to have a chance of opening this year.

According to an article on LakePlacidNews.com, Jim LaValley, the chairman of the volunteer group that operates Big Tupper, says if the mountain gets a lot of snow in early December, they will work hard to raise the capital needed to open.

The ski area does not have any snowmaking equipment, leaving it entirely dependent on the elements. Because they received no income from lift tickets during last year’s winter, LaValley says they cannot pay for the electricity to open.
