black bearMassachusetts Environmental Police and the state Department of Conservation and Recreation rangers are checking Wompatuck State Park for signs that a black bear and a cub are in the woods there, according to an article on PatriotLedger.com.

The search reportedly began on October 11, when a park visitor reported “a possible bear sighting” to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s dispatch center.

The caller said the bears were seen around Doane Street, one of the park’s main paved trails in Cohasset.

If confirmed, this would be the first verified black bear sighting on the South Shore since a cub was seen in Plymouth in 2011.
