A hiker was killed after falling more than 1,000 feet on Mount Katahdin in Maine’s Baxter State Park on Saturday.
According to Baxter State Park officials, the climber was a 68-year-old man from Holden, Maine. Officials did not release his name.
The man and another hiker were reportedly trying to climb Katahdin on the Abol Trail. Near the top of the trail, where it intersects with the top of Abol Slide, the hiker lost his footing and fell more than 1,000 feet down the Abol Slide’s icy surface, coming to a stop near the bottom of the open section of the slide.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Park rangers, members of the Wilderness Rescue Team and other climbers who were in the area helped with the recovery of the body.
