The prospect of a company mining Bald Mountain in a nearly pristine section of remote northern Maine is stirring a battle between those who say the area desperately needs jobs and those who want to protect the environment.

Bald Mountain, is Maine’s Aroostook Country, is in an area with little development; a place where roads are few, and moose, bear and deer are plentiful.

The area desperately needs jobs, and some say having a company mine Bald Mountain would give an economic boost to the region. But environmental advocates worry that mining produces an array of toxic byproducts that could pollute the area. And, they say, the region’s unbroken tracts of forest are the last relatively untouched place in the east. (READ MORE)
