If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to whitewater canoe or kayak, here’s your chance.

The Vermont Paddlers Club will host a two-day clinic for rookie whitewater paddlers on June 10 and 11.

The clinic, which will be held at Vermont’s Waterbury Reservoir, will introduce beginning paddlers to the basics of boat handling, river reading, and techniques for driving a boat through moving water.

American Canoe Association certified instructors and other experienced paddlers will lead the clinic, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Lessons begin at the reservoir early Saturday morning and move to river(s) in the local area suitable to level I instruction for the afternoon and all day Sunday.

Clinics for both whitewater kayak and whitewater canoe will be offered. The cost is $90 per person and includes a riverside lunch on both days. Boats, skirts, paddles, PFDs (lifejackets), helmets, and some river clothing will be available for loan to students.

Participants need to be reasonably fit, at least enough to manage traversing up and down often slippery or muddy paths to and from the river, and must be open to the possible need to swim to shore in moving water.
