Given that it was Massachusetts where Sam Adams beers were first brewed, helping to launch the current craft beer movement, it should be no surprise to anyone that today the Bay State is home to many exceptional breweries.

Boston.com recently used ratings data from BeerAdvocate.com to compile a list of the state’s 10 best breweries. To qualify, breweries had to be currently operating and had to have at least 50 reviews on Beer Advocate. Brick and Feather Brewery in western Massachusetts would have been high up on the list, but fell just short of the number of reviews needed with 47. (But I can personally vouch for the fact this is one of the very best breweries in the state.)

At the top of the list was Tree House Brewing in Monson. You can only get their beer at the brewery itself, but it’s well worth the trip.

Second place was Trillium Brewing, which is based in Boston but recently opened a taproom in Canton.

Third was Building 8 Brewery in Northampton, Massachusetts. Building 8 was started in 2015, brews in small batches and can be hard to find in stock – for good reason.
