New York officials have closed the Wakely Mountain Trail in the Adirondacks over fears that the 92-foot fire tower on top of the mountain could collapse.

The tower was closed to the public in December over fears about its structural integrity. Officials say the tower’s condition has worsened and it is possible it could collapse in heavy winds. They have now closed the trail to the tower to prevent possible injuries should the tower collapse.

No date has been given for when the trail may reopen, but officials say repairs will be undertaken as soon as possible to prevent the tower from collapsing.
