New York officials are closing Avalanche Lake Trail in the Adirondacks from August 15 to August 25 due to repair work.

The trail is often used by climbers accessing Trap Dike on Mount Colden.

During the closure, officials with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Student Conservation Association Adirondack Programs will be replacing the “Hitch-up Matildas,” the bridging on the cliff face along the lake.

Access thru Avalanche Pass to the head of the lake and from Lake Colden to the outlet will be possible, but through passage will be inaccessible.

Hikers and climbers are asked to seek alternate routes between Avalanche Camp and Lake Colden during this period. They should also be aware that the trail between Feldspar and Lake Arnold has some flooded sections which worsen during and after rains.
