A Massachusetts climber was seriously injured on Saturday after falling 50 feet off Woodchuck Ledge in Albany, New Hampshire.

According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, Keith Rehermann, 35, of Wakefield, Massachusetts, was rock climbing about 50 feet up the cliff at Woodchuck Ledge shortly before 1 p.m. when he fell. Several pieces of gear he had placed to stop his fall failed, and he landed at the base of the climb. His climbing partner called 911.

Rehermann suffered injuries to his right side and rescue personnel were concerned about possible injuries to his spine. He was immobilized, placed in a litter and lowered from the ledge, then carried out more than a half mile to a waiting ambulance. He reached the ambulance shortly after 4 p.m., and was transported to Memorial Hospital in North Conway for treatment.
