Some hikers have started a petition to save the Thomas Mountain Cabin in the Adirondacks from being demolished. But, given the position stated by New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation, chances of the cabin being saved seem remote.

The cabin stands atop Thomas Mountain in the Cat and Thomas Mountains Preserve. According to the Lake George Land Conservancy, the cabin offers 180-degree views and provides shelter for hikers.

However, the DEC plans to demolish the cabin. DEC purchased the Cat and Thomas land from the Lake George Land Conservancy in 2013, and added it to the forever wild forest preserve. DEC officials say the cabin has become a public nuisance and health threat. They say the cabin is nonconforming under the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan.
