The proposed East-West Highway in northern Maine is drawing harsh criticism from environmental groups who say it would cut through sensitive conservation and outdoor recreation areas.
According to a report from the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, representatives from the conservation groups Forest Ecology Network and Restore: The North Woods blasted the plans for the highway as threatening Maine’s water, wetland, wildlife, forest, air and climate resources. They also claimed the highway would be close to more than five dozen significant conservation and recreation areas.
Representatives from the construction company that would build the highway dismissed the criticism as lies aimed at derailing any development in northern Maine. (READ MORE)
