With its vast forests, wild rivers and rocky coastline, Maine has no shortage of great outdoor adventure opportunities. But a few are so incredible, they rise above the rest and should be chiseled onto any adventurer’s list of must-do trips.

Writer Josh Christie recently wrote an article for the Portland Press Herald in which he created a bucket list of the best outdoor adventures in Maine. The list includes rafting, kayaking and hiking trips, including taking on the legendary (and disturbingly steep) Precipice Trail in Acadia National Park. The trail might only be a mile-and-a-half long, but its exposure and difficulty – with hikers having to use iron rungs, ladders and handrails – make it one of the most iconic hikes in the Northeast.
