black bear 4The Green Mountain Club has issued a warning to hikers about an “increasingly brazen” bear around Vermont’s Camel’s Hump.

According to the club, a bear in the Camel’s Hump area has rummaged through campsites and destroyed tents.

Because of the bear activity, camping near the Monroe Trail and Dean Trail is prohibited at this time, which means Hump Brook Tenting area is closed and tent camping at Montclair Glen Lodge is not allowed.

While Montclair Glen Lodge remains open, if the shelter is full, options are limited.

The club asks hikers to pack out all garbage and food scraps, not to feed or approach bears, and if encountering a bear, back away slowly.

They say the bear activity is being monitored and they will provide an update when it is safe to camp in the area again.
