An experienced climber was killed after slipping and falling roughly 300 feet on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington on Sunday, February 10.

Officials with the U.S. Forest Service said Jeremy Ullmann, 37, of Somerville, Massachusetts, died from a long, sliding fall in Huntington Ravine.

According to an article on NHPR.org, Ullmann was an experienced rock climber and mountaineer. He was reportedly wearing crampons and making an approach to a technical section of Central Gully when he slipped and fell 300 feet. He had two ice axes with him, and officials say it appears he attempted to stop himself and one of the axes dragged a far distance through the snow.

Ullmann was a doctor who worked on the laboratory team in the Epilepsy Genetics Program at Boston Children’s Hospital. He leaves behind a wife and 3-year-old son.
