To many people, a 48-hour winter trek over 60 miles of snow, mountains and ice sounds like punishment. But to others, it sounds like a great way to spend a weekend.

Welcome to Extremus, the first event of 2015 for the new, Vermont-based endurance organization, The Endurance Society.

The society was created by Jack Cary and Andrew Weinberg, who was one of the creators of Vermont’s famous Death Race, one of the most grueling endurance events on the planet. According to a recent article on TimesArgus.com, Weinberg and Cary started the society as a way to get more people involved in different races that challenge both the body and the mind. Each race is different, with a different area of focus or a different sport involved.

Extremus on January 17 and 18 will be a weekend of remote wilderness, with no aid and no support crews. Participants must carry their own food, water and supplies.
