A new long distance hiking trail may soon exist in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts.
According to an article on BerkshireEagle.com, several groups in the the Berkshires have agreed to begin the first stage of what they hope will become a new long trail stretching through the Berkshires from the Connecticut border up to Vermont.
The goal of the Berkshire High Road project is to create a completely hikeable, north-to-south trail system linking the Berkshire region. The project is spearheaded by the Berkshire Natural Resources Council, a group that is strategically selecting and buying lands and easements throughout the region to link the High Road.
For the first stage of the project, the town of Lenox, the Berkshire Natural Resources Council and Mass Audubon have agreed on a partnership to create a 7-mile hiking trail along Yokun Ridge atop Lenox Mountain.
This first leg of the High Road will be mostly along existing pathways, linking Mahanna Cobble just south of Bousquet Mountain in Pittsfield to Olivia’s Overlook in Stockbridge. The route traverses a wildlife and ecological habitat, passive recreation and water supply area totaling nearly 4,000 acres.
