A Florida man was rescued Wednesday on New Hampshire’s Mount Madison after he activated an emergency beacon as heavy snow and powerful winds swept through the region.

Fish and Game officials reported that an emergency beacon registered to Andrew Carlson of Madeira Beach, Florida, was activated around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning from a location near Mount Madison.

According to an article on UnionLeader.com, Carlson had departed from Pinkham Notch on Tuesday morning to hike south along the Appalachian Trail. He hoped to complete a large section of the Presidential Range “before the weather got too bad.”

When attempts to contact Carlson were unsuccessful, volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue and New Hampshire Fish and Game’s Advanced Search and Rescue Team responded.

Rescuers endured heavy snow that approached 3 feet in some areas, as well as frigid temperatures and high winds.

A rescuer found Carlson huddled underneath the Madison Spring Hut shortly after 1:30 p.m. Carlson was able to hike out under his own power, and he reached the trailhead with rescuers at roughly 4:30 p.m.
