A 24-year-old hiker from Billerica, Massachusetts, was rescued Monday, November 9, on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington.

According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, the hiker, Andy Nguyen, climbed Mount Washington with the intention of taking the Cog Railway down the mountain. But when he reached the summit he learned the railway is no longer operating during the week.

Nguyen reportedly became exhausted and began cramping as he tried descending the mountain. Officials said at one point he almost slipped over an 80-foot cliff. He called 911 and was found by rescuers in Huntington Ravine stuck on a wet rock. Rescuers used rope to pull Nguyen back to the summit and then transported him down on the auto road.

Officials said Nguyen was ill-equipped for the cold weather or hiking at night.
