A Massachusetts hiker survived an unplanned night in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest this week, staying warm by using layers of dry clothes and a trash bag.
According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, Robie Gould, 58, of Westford, Massachusetts, was reported missing Monday morning. He had embarked on a solo hike in the Pemigewasset Wilderness near Lincoln, New Hampshire on Sunday morning.
Conservation officers found Gould hiking in the rain on Zealand Trail around 2 p.m. on Monday. He endured below freezing temperatures and windy conditions overnight.
Officials said Gould was an experienced hiker who was prepared to stay overnight in a winter environment if he had to. To stay warm and dry, he wore extra clothes, a poncho and a large trash bag.
