Really, people. Who the hell hikes the White Mountains this time of year without carrying any lights with them?

An amazing amount of foolish people, as it turns out, because each year nearly every autumn weekend sees ill-prepared hikers with no lights overcome by darkness, and they end up making panicked calls to have someone else come brave the dark woods and save their asses. That’s right: They bring their cell phones, but don’t think to bring a flashlight.

This past weekend was no different, as New Hampshire Fish and Game officers rescued multiple hikers who had no lights and were overcome by darkness on Mount Chocorua and Waterville Valley.

Also this weekend, officers rescued an injured trail runner and a stranded kayaker.
