An illegal campfire turned into a wildfire that burned a small area of land near Cadillac Mountain in Maine’s Acadia National Park on Friday.

According to an article on MDIslander.com, a camper at an illegal campsite near the bottom of the Cadillac Mountain summit road started a wildfire Friday that burned about one-fifth of an acre before being extinguished by local fire departments.

Park visitors reported the fire to rangers at around 5 p.m., and the blaze was out within an hour.

Park officials say at least one “person of interest” has been identified with the campsite and fire.

Within the past three weeks, three illegal campsites with open fires have been found in the park. Camping in Acadia is allowed only in the park’s four campgrounds.
