A hiker who fractured her ankle while climbing Maine’s Mount Katahdin had to be airlifted from Baxter State Park on Thursday.

The 57-year-old woman from western Maine had to be carried down the mountain by park staff, volunteers and friends. According to park officials, they arrived at the Chimney Pond campground at 2 a.m. From there, she was airlifted by a crew from the Maine Forest Service.

Park officials say fading daylight, wet conditions and difficult terrain were likely factors in her suffering the injury.
