Katahdin SignAlthough it’s the end of May, the trails leading up Maine’s Mount Katahdin remain closed due to poor trail conditions.

Officials for the Baxter State Park Authority posted on their Facebook page earlier today (Tuesday, May 27), saying they still have no idea when the first Katahdin trails will be open to the public. Rangers inspected Katahdin-access trails and the Tableland on Friday, where they found snow and ice on trails and very soft conditions on the Tableland.

They say the trails will remain closed until the trails are safe to hike and the threat of damaging rare plants has diminished. And protecting the trails and plants is something they take seriously. On Friday, a park ranger issued a summons to two hikers apprehended hiking on a closed trail on Katahdin.
