Concerned by the frequency of kayakers overturning in the mouth of the Merrimack River in the last year, the harbormaster of Salisbury, Massachusetts, is warning paddlers to avoid the area, according to an article on NewburyportNews.com.

Salisbury Harbormaster Ray Pike said paddling near the mouth of the Merrimack River is a reckless choice for novice kayakers, and a very challenging task for the most experienced kayakers. He said there are occasional days when it may appear relatively calm, but tides change every five to six hours, and a small change in wind yields a different passage.

Late last year, a group of Boy Scouts were rescued after overturning in the area. This year, during Memorial Day weekend, a paddler was rescued after overturning.
