A Maine kayaker was killed this weekend while whitewater kayaking just south of Baxter State Park, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Officials say Joseph Giffune Jr., 25, of Millinocket, became trapped in a hydraulic while kayaking on Nesowadnehunk Stream.

A hydraulic is a dangerous hole of water that is created when water pouring over a rock or ledge causes surface water to flow upstream. They can trap and hold even the most experienced kayakers. (Read how to escape a hydraulic.)

Officials say another kayaker tried to rescue Giffune, but was unsuccessful.
