New Hampshire Fish and Game officials report that a hiker who went missing in the White Mountains yesterday has been found dead.

Rescue crews endured ferocious winds, deep snow and dangerously cold temperatures Sunday night as they searched for the hiker who had activated a personal locator beacon in the area of Mount Adams and Mount Madison. The beacon was registered to Kate Matrosova, 32, of New York City. The search was suspended as rescuers encountered poor visibility, winds of up to 80 miles per hour and temperatures of 20 below zero.

Crews resumed the search this morning. According to a report on WMUR.com, Matrosova’s body was found in the area of Star Lake. Officials said it appeared she died of exposure to extreme temperatures.

Matrosova’s husband reportedly dropped her off at 5 a.m. Sunday at the base of the mountains. She planned to hike the summit of Mount Madison and continue through Mount Adams, Mount Jefferson and Mount Washington.
