A new canoe and kayak launch now open in Middletown, Connecticut, gives paddlers easy access to the convergence of the Coginchaug and Mattabasset rivers, as well as the watershed known as the “Floating Meadows,” according to an article on Courant.com.

The launch ramp is the culmination of nine years of work between the city and the Jonah Center for Earth and Art, which has been pursuing the launch.

Officials say the area is a vital habitat for fish, birds, turtles, beavers, snakes and plant life. Bald eagles nest there, and a rare kingfisher species and osprey can also be found there.
