Marisa Eve Girawong, a mountaineer and physician’s assistant from Edison, New Jersey, was reportedly killed in a large avalanche that occurred on Mount Everest following the Nepal earthquake yesterday.

Madison Mountaineering, which operates out of Seattle, Washington, reports that Girawong was working as their Everest/Lhotse base camp doctor. According to their website, she perished in the aftermath of the avalanche that struck the base camp area.

Girawong’s bio on the Madison site described her as a physician’s assistant working in a Level 1 Emergency Room, with a focus on trauma and wilderness medicine. She was an avid indoor and outdoor rock climber for several years and, as a mountaineer, had successfully reached the summits of Mount Washington and Mount Rainier.

Her Facebook posts in recent weeks painted the picture of a person thoroughly loving her time spent among the world’s highest mountains.
