long trail bridgeAfter more than a century of planning, a bridge for hikers crossing Vermont’s Winooski River is ready to be built.

According to an article in the Burlington Free Press, construction on the bridge is scheduled to begin this summer.

The Green Mountain Club has been struggling since 1912 to figure out a way to help hikers cross the Winooski River along the Long Trail’s route. Currently, hikers take a three mile detour along town roads, including a heavily traveled bridge in Jonesville.The suspension bridge in Bolton would fill the last major gap in the Long Trail, a footpath that runs the length of Vermont along the Green Mountains between the Massachusetts and Canadian borders.
