watkins glen entranceNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a $6.5 million plan to transform the entrance to Watkins Glen State Park.

The park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, with a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound. Within two miles, the glen’s stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course.

But some officials say the approach to the park has long detracted from its beauty. The plan to remake the entrance will relocate the parking area away from the gorge, creating a less congested and more welcoming approach. The main entrance parking lot will be returned to green space, creating new park amenities and enhanced interpretation of Watkins Glen’s unique natural and cultural history.

Construction is expected to begin this summer and be complete for the 2017 summer season. Access to the gorge will be maintained during the project.
