A Philadelphia hiker was killed Sunday morning when strong winds blew over a tree onto him while he was on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland.

According to an article on WTOP.com, the hiker, Jason Parish, 36, was an environmental engineer and folk musician who frequently camped in rugged conditions.

A report on HeraldMailMedia.com says Parish was standing near the Ed Garvey shelter near Weverton, Maryland, when the wind blew the tree onto him. Officials warned hikers to be aware of standing dead trees in their area when winds are strong.
