Called one of the most beautiful places in a state known for its beautiful places, Maine’s Frenchboro Preserve, located on an island just 8 miles from Acadia National Park, will open for wilderness camping beginning next summer.

According to an article on PressHerald.com, the preserve makes up 80 percent of Long Island, which features unusual rock formations and an intimate, often solitary experience with wildlife.

Ferry service to the preserve is available out of Bass Harbor, making it the Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s most accessible island preserve, even if it is the most wild.
