The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing kayaker on Rhode Island’s Providence River.

The kayaker, Michael Perry, 46, of Warwick, Rhode Island, was reported missing on Friday. His overturned kayak was found on an ice shelf on the Providence River at the Squantum Point inlet on Sunday morning.

Coast Guard officials received a report that Perry was missing at 5 p.m. on Friday. He reportedly left at noon on Friday in a 10-foot orange kayak and was expected to be on the water for an hour. When he did not return as planned, his wife called 911 and gave emergency response crews his intended route and schedule.

The Coast Guard suspended its search late Saturday afternoon after searching a 104-square-mile area.

Perry’s kayak was discovered Sunday morning, and Coast Guard officials said family members were able to confirm it was his kayak.
